I was really interested in this book, knowing that this is (loosely) based on a true story I was expecting to get more addicted to it. But that didn't happened.

Although, at some points this is a very dark and twisted story I found it very dragging and kinda hard to keep up. There are too many characters, too many similar names, too many background stories...

Maybe I need to reread it and the next time I will enjoy it more. We'll see!

The Details:
Narrated by Kirsten Potter
Unabridged

I think I would have preferred having read the non fiction event of what happened, which is a first for me.
It just felt a bit off and I can't exactly pin point why - but I know that for me, I quickly lost track of all the characters.

The skin walker lore was interesting, and I would like to read more about that in the future.

Well written, an interesting take on a historical event. It was a little slow in
some places,  and there are some POVs I probably could have done without . I also found the end a bit abrupt, especially for such a slow burn book. Over all a pretty good book though and the characters I did like were enjoyable to read. I think anyone who loves horror and historical retellings would greatly enjoy it.

I was looking for a scary book to read and this didn't fit the bill.

None of the characters were very likable, there wasn't much suspense, and the book didn't even feel like it was building towards anything.

I also didn't really enjoy interluding back to a characters past in order to forcibly fill in backstory which may or may not be relevant and delay any suspense that was building.

Solid, dread from the start story. Walks between the mystical and the desperate for scientific explanation.

For a while it's a jumble of POVs but they do ultimately tie together in a horrid grotesque bow. Don't get attached to anyone, don't hope for the best - if you know anything about the history of the Donner-Reed Party, you know what you've gotten into !
