Not for the faint of heart, but a fascinating and imaginative retelling of the Donner Party. If you know that history, you'll *technically* know how it ends, but the way Katsu gets there, her answer to "how?" is quite compelling and twisty. And suitably horrific. She's a marvellous writer.

not super familiar with the true story of the donner party (and decided to save learning the facts until i finished this book) so can't speak to the historical accuracy and i'm not sure if the repeated
incest
was fact or fiction. if fiction, then it was unnecessary and a bit weird to include.

this book was fine, a decent read. i found it very readable, i was invested in some of the characters' stories, but the ending of the book really let me down, i felt that it could've spent longer in that last section as things broke down completely and they were trapped in the snow and committing
cannibalism
and we never found out what happened to some characters!!! why did we follow mary graves and edwin bryant only to never find out what happened to them? i appreciate the emotional ending, but what happened to keseberg? if these characters died or something i would be happy to know that, it's just very unsatisfying to have followed them throughout the story but not find out whether they survived in the end.

Loved the historical aspects in this story. I thought that it was really good and the intensity builds really nicely.

Gruesome twist on a true story. I'm not overly acquainted with the true story, so I don't feel like I was able to appreciate this book as much as perhaps I could have.

Adding a wendigo vibe to a tale of cannibalism isn't exactly groundbreaking, but it was still interesting. I don't feel like all the questions were answered sufficiently. Specifically I feel the part of the story with Edwin Bryant felt unfinished.

I liked it, but it was a very slow burn.

Well written but, through no fault of the book's, I realized I just don't want to read about pilgrims.
Went about as well as I thought it would.
