I think most other people were right when they say that this book really helps you understand what's going on in this universe. There were parts of the first book that really confused me with the magic, the tech and all the other things that weren't fully explained. This book, I got a better idea of what was going on and I actually really enjoyed it. What I like about them is their unique perspective on things like vampires and shifters. But god damn it, I want some information about Kate! I feel so in the dark about her. Grrrrr. On to the next book.

Good character and world writing. Bad mystery. If my protagonists are solving cases, I like my plots to be follow-along-able/theoretically-solvable rather than minor-internal-mythology-newly-revealed.

I'm re-reading the Kate Daniels series, and I think I'm enjoying it even more the second time through. I think it helps having finished the whole series and just knowing and loving these characters and this world. The one thing I didn't like about this one was how quickly Kate started calling Julie "her kid". It's like, she met this girl two days ago and wants to protect her (I get that), but she's all "they took my kid". It was just too much, too fast.

Original review:
Started so slow that I began to wonder if I wanted to just quit this series. But it got better and better, and I loved the epilogue. I'm definitely not quitting.

Re-read Jan 2024, happy to give it more than 4 stars since I love IA but will keep the original rating.

These books are action packed with magic, shapeshifters, new characters, dropping hints of the mystery of Kate and a long, slow burn between Curran and Kate. I remember wanting their relationship to hurry up but now I am fine knowing that we will get there eventually!

Highlights and spoilers ahead:
Kate and Jim are partners from time to time, mercenaries. It bothers me that Jim is such an ass to her but she shrugs it off. She is tasked with heckling their target, too funny:
“Damn Jeremy, you need to work on your vocabulary. So many good names to call me and the best you could come up with is bitch? Give me the salamander before you hurt yourself.”
“Suck my dick…whore!”
----------
I ducked behind the support just as the fire smashed against concrete. Flames shot past on both sides of me. The acrid stench of sulfur stung my nostrils.
“That last fireball missed me by a mile. You shoot blanks with your other salamander, too, Jeremy?”
“Eat shit and die!”

Kate gets a few months of separation from the Pack, until Derek shows up:
He reached behind him and pushed the door closed. “I’ve come to extend a petition from the Pack.”
I don’t want to work with Curran, I don’t want to work with Curran, I don’t want to work with Curran.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear that right. I thought you said the Pack wanted my help?”
“Yes.” Little tiny sparks danced in his eyes. “We were screwed and he didn’t even kiss us first.”
-----------------
“He must have balls,” I said.
“He did look male.”
“Description?”
“Very fast.”
“That’s it? That’s all you got?”
“Very good shot.” I sighed. “Who did he shoot?”
“Jim.”
Oh shit. “Is he okay?”
“He was shot four times in less than two seconds. He isn’t very happy about it. A bit tender in places. But generally he’ll be okay.”

You get the jist of it, the writing is snappy and never dull.

Kate meets Julie:
“BASTARD!” THE GIRL YELLED. “I HATE YOU!”
“Any clue why he took off in a hurry?”
“No!” She sat down cross-legged on the crates, her face a picture of abject misery. Alrighty then.
“I take it you’re Julie.”
“You’re real smart. Did you figure it out all by yourself?”

We have a pivitol moment with a way deeper meaning, Curran FEEDS her:
“So that’s the secret,” the Beast Lord said.
I froze with the spoon halfway to my mouth. That was it. He had figured out what I was and now he was playing with me.
“You okay?” he asked. “Gone a bit pale there.”
In a moment he would drop the charade and rip me to pieces. If I was lucky. “Secret to what?”
“Secret to shutting you up,” he said. “I just have to beat you till you’re half-dead, then give you chicken soup and”—he raised his hands—“blessed silence.”
I went back to the soup. Ha-ha. Very funny.

My favorite scene from this story:
I tossed Slayer on the bed, never taking my eyes off of him, and put the maps on the sheets.
“Back away, three steps.”
We stepped back in unison, he to the middle of the room, and I to the wall by the chair.
“On three. One,” he said, bending forward like a runner. “Two.”
He lunged for the maps. I grabbed the chair and hit him with it. He went down. I hit him again to make sure he stayed that way, stepped over him, and picked up the maps.
“I win.”
Now if only the room would stop spinning, I’d be all set. He groaned and a torrent of obscenities burst from him.
“Your problem is, you underestimate me because I’m a woman.” I nudged him with my foot.

Heat with Curran:
A slow, lazy, carnivorous smile touched Curran’s lips. “Not only will you sleep with me, but you will say ‘please.’”
I stared at him, shocked.
The smile widened. “You will say ‘please’ before and ‘thank you’ after.”
Nervous laughter bubbled up. “You’ve gone insane. All that peroxide in your hair finally did your brain in, Goldilocks.”

Aunt B knows how to turn a man off quick, lol:
“You know,” she said, stirring her tea, “the fastest way to get him off your back is to sleep with him. And tell him you love him. Preferably while in bed.”

And to show that Curran was listening to Kate when she poured her heart out before the battle:
I lowered my sword, expecting him to pass, but suddenly he stepped in dangerously close.
“Welcome home. I’m glad you made it. There is coffee in the kitchen for you.”
My mouth gaped open. He inhaled my scent, bent close, about to kiss me… I just stood there like an idiot.
Curran smirked and whispered in my ear instead. “Psych.”
