3.5 stars rounded to 4! I didn't think that I'd enjoy a story that doesn't revolve around Roma and Juliette, but I was mistaken. Rosalind and Orion are cool too :)

I adored this book!
I loved getting to learn about the civil war in 1930s Shanghai and the Japanese Imperialist occupation. The spy mystery and espionage was really well written!

I think Chloe gong has great ideas but her writing just doesn’t work for me.

An ingenious work of art.
Ms. Chloe Gong has certainly exceeded my expectations in this one. And I admit it was silly of me for choosing to finish this book rather than reading TVD duology first. In the end, no regrets on my part. The characters were amusing but lovely at the same time.
The main couple would've been Loid and Yor from Spy Family if they had been more honest about each other's careers and if the grumpy x sunshine trope was reversed! The sexual tensions in between combats and undercovers were undeniable. And the plot twists that kept unfolding throughout the book were riveting! ✨

When I say a book is "tropey" and I mean "bad", this is the kind of bullshit I'm talking about. It uses tropes like "who did this to you" to pretend like the characters have chemistry.

such a slow start and I didn’t even feel myself getting invested at 100+ pages into the book which is a bad sign
