Lots of excellent qualities (namely an evocative historical setting and a great villain), but felt too long and, at times, repetitive.

I was somewhat disappointed by this book. It was all a bit melodramatic and then the end put a different slant on things. However, the very modern take on the story just didn't ring true and although I should have been horrified and felt anger at the womens' treatment I felt nothing because I didn't feel I really knew anyone that well and it seemed like a bodice ripper gone wrong. The men were also portrayed really poorly. Everyone was so 2 dimensional!
It was very readable though and I shall definitely be looking around as I walk up the High Street in Edinburgh.
