Ok so like I don’t know how to review this book? It is not the best sequel I have ever read but yet again its just so compelling and I really want to know what happens.

Alright so personally, I think the best part of this series is the characters. I like almost all of them. I see each of them as very realistic and humane, and they can be quite cut-throat when they have to be. The only one I would say is the most unlike this is Soren (because he goes against his country hella quick) but even him I like because he is such a cinnamon roll.

I also really like that the protagonist isn’t just this action hero. She is more of a strategist in the courts, and I haven’t seen that in many YA books. So there isn’t a lot of action, but I think that there is a reason to that.

Laura Sebastian, I’m sorry, but you aren’t the best at writing action. Its very clunky and formative, and it can sometimes be very confusing to follow. Especially the final battle, but I’m making this spoiler free, so if you read it, you will know what I mean.

The beginning was a little slow, the ending was too rushed, and the middle was pretty long with not much happening except some flirting. So why did I like this book as much as I did? I honestly don’t know. I think I just needed a classic YA cliche book, and this fits that mold pretty well. And if you need that too, I say go ahead and read this book.

PS: that ending really hyped me up, and if the author does it right, the finale can be pretty freaking awesome. Lets go to some mines!!

I’m always hesitant when going on to the second book in a series; they always seem to disappoint me but this book did no such thing. A good book for those who want a fantasy book with strong female characters and addresses themes like sexism. Somehow reading about a character navigating a dangerous political climate interesting and still giving me a thrilling plot twist at the end. I can’t wait to pick up the finale installment.

It took me a really long time to get back into this story. I read the first book so long ago that I didn't remember anything that happened. However, by the end of the book I was really starting to enjoy it.

I thought this book was a great follow up to the first and didn’t suffer from the dreaded “second book syndrome”. The characters were more fleshed out and we were able to see how complicated life is for everyone. War is not glamorous and I am happy that the author took the time to discuss different burial and honoring of life ceremonies and that the would be taken care of. The love triangle is a little annoying though. I really want her to be with Blaise because of their past and their powers, but I really want her with Soren as well since she was falling for him before she knew it. I am intrigued to find out how everything plays out for Thro and Astrea.

I feel like the whole suitor part was boring and unnecessary. This wasn’t as good as the first but I think the next will pick up again.

Another reviewer compared this to the Bachelorette and sadly, I agree.

The world is fascinating and the larger story is compelling, but this book got bogged down in a weak love triangle with some bonus gold-diggers thrown in for the sake of drama. I also felt like there was a lot of telling instead of showing when it came to the romantic relationships - it felt forced.

I really enjoyed the parts where Theo was doing anything but trying to choose between her suitors or her love triangle, but those parts where unfortunately brief. It did have a string ending though.

Saw the "betrayal" coming WAY in advance (which is surprising for me, I am not always so quick to catch on). Enjoyed some parts, but felt a bit all over the place
