I've become quite enamored with this rather different world of parallel earth history when paranormals- or Others- are the ruling races and the humans live there on sufferance and only the prophesies of the Cassandra Sangue (blood prophets) keep the greed and ambitions that will lead to war and annihilation of the human race in check. More intrigue, danger, and the hope of surprising friendship and alliances keep things just on the edge of danger in this latest series entry.
Vision of Silver is the third in the Others, a parallel earth history urban fantasy series, that do best when read in order.
Meg is setting in at the Lakeside Compound among the Terre Indigene and her human pack. She's trying to figure out how to make the life of blood prophet less dangerous and more helpful to her friends who are all in danger from some of the humans who are shattering the peace and trying to force the powerful terre indigene peoples into war for the dominant position in the world. The lives of many rely on hers and other cassandra sangue prophecy. And, the newly freed cassandra sangue are relying on Meg to show them how to live out in the world where they control their own choices now.
Simon has instituted some major changes in relations between his people and the humans and now worries that it might have been too much. There are more problems than ever with the Humans First and Last Movement and humans forgetting just how dangerous the others, particularly the ones in the Wild Country, truly are. Humans confuse and anger him much of the time and only bringing Meg into the Lakeside Courtyard and seeing her interactions with a few good humans has kept him from seeing the whole race wiped off the map. He sees the potential with these few, but the schemes of some may rile the powerful others and take it all out of his hands. With the help of the other Courtyard residents, he must work with the few humans who stand loyal to keep the peace so his new initiatives have a chance to come to fruition.
Monty was forced to leave his old life behind when he saved a terre indigene child. Now he is in Lakeside and liaison with the powerful Others. He is well aware that humans are pushing their luck and he works to right the wrongs and keep the peace. Now, there is the dark mystery of how his child, that he has been working to get out of the clutches of a Humans First and Last leader, suddenly arrives on the train, alone, with a teddy bear covers in blood, and a secret powerful enough to make her unsafe and in need of more protection than he can provide alone. Lizzy's arrival shows him, Simon, and the rest of their group of allies just what the HFaL movement is planning and it is worse than they thought. Meg's prophecies and this bit of luck may be the break they need.
So much is advancing and going on in this latest installment. No sooner do they defeat the Controller and free the Cassandra Sangue women and girls than they have another powerful enemy rising up to defeat. It was interesting getting the many perspectives and time with the large cast of characters. Time at the Courtyard with all the familiar others including Meg and Simon was fab. Meg is still growing personally, but so is Simon. She has to confront her own demons and he has to discover just who he is in this shifting world that he is strongly responsible for make as he forges a connections with some of the humans that hasn't existed for centuries. I liked the growing hints of something more between Meg and Simon.
This book introduced the conflict of discovering the answers to the mystery that Lizzy brought with her, but it also felt very much like a transition book setting up for a greater conflict coming in the near future. I can't wait to see what is to come now that Meg is helping the other cassandra sangue find their way out in the world, the truly powerful Others are taking notice of the bad humans' maneuverings, and the Courtyard people are firming up their loyalty to a few humans and taking a strong stance against the rest.
Urban fantasy fans who want a different and fresh world to explore should give this series a go.
My second time experiencing this book I chose the audiobook edition with the talented Alexandra Harris narrating. Her voice work allowed me to sink even deeper into an already absorbing story and I she does the various characters and races so distinctly. Loved it even better than my first time listening.

This book lead on perfectly from the previous two - expanding on the developing themes already presented as well as creating a new plot that was engaging and aided the overall plot. I have throughly enjoyed this series so far and eagerly await the next instalment. I have enjoyed reading these books from the perspective of different characters which kept the book exciting and allowed much more character development. This book seemed to be mainly building up to something, which didnt happen in this book but i expect will in the next, but despite this the new plot introduced was concluded well and the ended was as 'happy' as you could expect. I have enjoyed seeing Meg and Simons relationship grow, and have especially enjoyed this being more of a subplot, with the developing potential romance never taking the forefront. It made a nice change to see the emphasis being on friendship and its importance, and having Megs boundaries respected by Simon.

Fantastic addition to the series. I can't wait for the next but I hope we finally get some romance in the next one!

Another great addition to the story of The Others and the Courtyard! Lots of exciting drama, and more depth into an already unique, complex, and incredible world. Can't wait for more!
