This was a fairly fast paced and easy read, but it still had depth and dynamic characters which I enjoyed. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted a feel good summer story.

I read the reviews where people just seemed to gush over this one. It didn't give me the same impression, but was an easy read all the way around. Highly predictable on all counts - perhaps that's what makes it likeable?

The story revolves around Macy (just love her name), who is dealing with the death of her father, her mother that won't get close to her anymore or talk about grief, and her perfect boyfriend who heads off to brain camp for the summer. Thank goodness, Macy finds a job with the catering folks at Wish. They provide a sense of chaos in an otherwise routine and highly boring world.

It just didn't grab me. Not horrible, but not great either. A solid 3.

Oh, no. I know what the persons that know me are going to say: "Sara preaches how she doesn't like YA books, and then we turn our backs to her for one second and she's read lots of them and rated them very well". I feel you, I am just as surprised.

I knew nothing about this book before I actually ordered it online. It had another, very gorgeous cover on the website (unfortunately, I didn't got that cover of it) and a very poetic description + the interesting title... it just made me curious! And as I was not in the mood for anything else, more serious, I told myself to just give this book a try.

Macy Queen is the perfect-type of girl. She spends minutes in front of the mirror to make sure her hair looks nice, her boyfriend is the best guy in school and she has her priorities set right. But she wasn't always like that, but since her father died, she shows a composure and strenght that she's not sure she has.

I was not impressed by the story itself. It was a little bit predictable at some points and nothing wow came up, but just seeing the evolution of Macy as the summer unfolds and as she finds new friends and a job she enjoys is enough. Because this is what this book is about: the change that trying something new can bring in your life. Even reading about the normal summer days is enjoyable, simply because the author manages to give off the nostalgic vibe of the season.

Macy is also a very likeable character. She's not annoying, everything mostly has a point when it comes to her, but at the same time she realizes the problems in her life, even if she isn't brave enough to face them. She post-pones the things she dreads doing and she enjoys being surrounded by friends. She finds happiness and wants to keep it, she hurts when she is hurting, and in her imperfection, she's amazing.
I also really, really liked all the other characters in the book, even if they aren't as developed. I learned to like them, and at least each has its story that says something about their personality and life. It was just really nice to see how the relationship between the group of friends changes and they all had a very supportive friendship. I also really liked the fact that talk of toxic relationship came up at some point in the book, even if it was only a line, it was important and it made its impact and these things should be more often found in YA books, because we need more youngsters educated on the shitty things they can have in their life.

It's a story about dealing with loss, about the change that can be brought to someone by the people they receive in their life, about wanting change in your life and about the risks that come with living. For me, at this moment, all the thing about doing things to reach happiness meant a very important lesson and probably I loved this book more especially because I found in it some things I needed to hear.

This book is not life-changing. It's not extraordinary in any way, but it's a motivation and a nice talk when you need it, it's fun while still discussing important matters and overall is just a very nice reading experience. I haven't heard so many great things about Sarah Dessen to be honest, but this book exceeded my expectations.

I'm starting to think this author isn't for me. This book is written with younger readers in mind, and I probably would have enjoyed it more if I was a teenager.
