We often say that the Dominican Republic es un patio — the size of a backyard to express how everybody knows each other. This book beautifully takes that idea to show how our paths and stories are intertwined in ways beyond what we could imagine. This was my first Julia Alvarez novel and I’m so glad I finally get to read this amazing author who somehow makes me feel homesick and yet closer to home.

Sort of felt like a bummer at times. Not because it was sad, but because it dragged a bit. There were plenty of interesting plot points but the overall effect was meh.
