This was dystopian when it was published, and now it's uncomfortably contemporary. Because it depicts a world where abortions are illegal, and each woman is grappling with what this means for them now and in the future.

Calling this book speculative fiction might be overstating it a bit--some of its predictions have already arrived. The world in this book doesn't feel any different than our current world which, on reflection, may make it a little scarier.

The book was assembled skillfully, with effectively deployed repetitions and a completely external plot (the biography that one of the characters is writing) that is--to a degree--interesting, although the point the author is trying to make with it is a bit weak.

Nevertheless, worth a read.

Thought it was good. Wasn’t anything amazingly special and I wouldn’t say it was dystopian… I would read a book on the arctic explorer though! She seemed interesting.

I cannot read dystopian fiction about reproductive rights these days.

I don't know, I didn't love it and I didn't hate it? It was interesting enough to hold my attention, but I wasn't excited to read it. Good writing for sure, and some interesting characters.. but it just fell a little flat to me. I wish it had been a bit more engrossing and the characters had more depth to them.
