2.5. This book felt like a melting pot of all the YA fantasy books I’ve read. Im honestly getting plot points mixed up with Powerless and Fourth Wing and Bridge Kingdom LMAO.
I think if I binged this book in one setting (and read it before other YA fantasies), I’d probably be more into it.
MY BIGGEST ISH - (no spoilers) but the romance ended up being integral to the plot line. Many things hinged on the relationships between these characters. AND BECAUSE OF THIS, one would think you need your romance plot line to be strong, believable, etc etc right?
WRONG!
I genuinely thought the romance was underdeveloped and lacking in any sort of tension. SO when home girl author decided to hinge the ENTIRE plot (rebellions, political maneuvering, your classic YA fantasy conflicts) on these godforsaken romances, I was like ??????????????? I feel zero emotions for these relationships why do they hold so much weight in the book???
Maybe I’m not making sense because I’m trying to not spoil LOL.
I just think this book should have committed to the Romantasy genre because I just did not believe a lot of these conflicts, and the ending didn’t even gag me because I didn’t actually care about I the characters!!!
The more I write this review the more I think I should bump down the rating haha. Really working myself up here! But overall it was still a dece book and all respect to the author for coming up with this

This book and series is a MUST READ! You will NOT be disappointed! It really got me back into reading because I thought for some reason I needed to take a break?! Ha. I am in love with this book! I just finish it and even though it’s 3am, I’m still so shook from what happened at the end that I can’t sleep. I was so unprepared. Anyways, I decided to write a review ASAP because I am literally blown away by the ending! And because if I don’t do it right away, I never will.
This really reminded me of the hunger games and the whole mockingjay role Katniss had. Mare’s position is kind of the same. And maybe that’s partially why i love this book so much?!
I was a little bored at first but then it really started to pick up and I think the ending made up for all the slow parts. It seemed like nothing was really happening in the first half and then a bunch of stuff did in the second part.
Tbh I was shipping Maven and Mare so hard the entire time (like who wasn’t?) and that is why I was so shocked by his betrayal. Honestly, I fell hard for his “sincerity” and “kindness”. He just seemed to truly care about Mare and stuff but I guess he really is his mother’s son and learned from the best (aka EVIL QUEEN ELARA)!!
So despite all my ravings about this book, there are some holes, or things, that don’t make sense to me. LIKE HOW MARE GOT AWAY WITH MESSING THE CAMERAS?!?! I mean yes Elara was in on the whole things the entire time and told others lies to cover it up but still. Mare should of know it could easily be traced back to her and should of been suspicious when no one, especially Elara, didn’t question her about possible involvement. For the reader, that must raise some red flags as to something fishy going on. It did for me at least.
And that whole prison break thing?? Like what?! How did Mare ever possibly think she and Julian could get away with it?? I mean, like Julian said there are only a few singers left so that doesn’t leave many suspects. His kind of power was the only one who could make people forget. I mean it doesn’t take a lot of connect two and two together.
Also why did no in the Guard tell Mare Shade was alive?! She brought it up multiple times and Kilorn, out of all people, didn’t tell her? What was the point of keeping that secret? It didn’t really make a big plot twist.
So yes it’s true that I fell for Maven whole facade and fakeness but I still would of been prudent and cautious in sharing things with him especially those that involved any potential danger to anyone. Like Mare was not hesitant to share anything with him. Yes, she truly thought he cared for her and cared about the cause for oppressed people, but she literally just met and got engaged to him (Frozen anyone??)!!! I’m not sure I would be risking my life, much less the lives of other innocent people, in sharing sensitive info to someone I barely know.
Anyways, it was great overall. Aveyard created such an intriguing world and amazing characters. Her writing is also phenomenal! Like honestly, That alone made up 2/5 of why I loved this book! Anyways, I can’t wait to see what happens in Glass Sword!

This was on my reading list for a while & after a friend's recommendation (push), it didn't disappoint! I loved the storyline; with well-loved tropes used in unique ways, without being too predictable, which is a great writing skill! I am excited to see where the author takes these characters through the rest of the series!

I might be too old to relate to teen protagonists anymore. Just wasn't entertaining enough for me to continue. Not a bad book for fans of teen dystopia YA.

Interesting premise but the story and the characters didn't land for me. I found the technology mix to be a bit jarring and I didn't find the character development to be believable. I haven't decided if I will continue the series.
