I wasn’t sure I would like this book - as it started I didn’t understand why these details needed to be told, even knowing they must be necessary for the story as a whole. But when it came together, it did so beautifully.

The constant switch between first person and third person POV was very weird. I did get very invested about 75% in but before that it just seemed sort of repetitive.

I picked up a copy of this novel at the library book sale.
“The Christie Affair” follows two women in 1925. Nan sought to be involved in the Christie’s life, so she got close to Agatha and her husband, Archie. It did not take long for Nan to become his mistress, and cause Agatha’s world to entirely implode. This idea to infiltrate their world took inception when Nan was still a young girl, and she was madly in love with a different man. But time, the Great War, and secrets tore them apart.
Nan’s story in particular both interested me and broke my heart. Her reasoning for wanting to be Archie’s mistress almost entirely shattered my heart, and I found it difficult to want to continue the story. Her life before the Christies was riddled with so much devastation, but her commitment to love and playing this long game was beautiful. I do not condone “luring” Archie from his wife, but I empathize with the motivations behind it.
The egregious crime against Nan made me so unbelievably angry. I do not know how a person, especially a person in that type of profession, could have so callously made that kind of life altering decision. This was the one element of the novel that has stuck with me.
Most of this novel felt kind of forgettable and flat to me. I was just not invested in the story until we got more from Nan, and even then, I was really only interested in Nan’s story.
If you like a historical fiction that harbors a big secret, I highly recommend this novel.
