i too think we’re gonna be better than we are. and did this maybe make me think my novel was shit? perhaps yes. and did i need that, probably.

gonna think also about “it’s called another country. it’s about this country” for a good while.

picked this up in chicago n read it in montana, another country.

There's something uniquely special about gaining access to a beloved author's thoughts formulated and articulated in real-time during a conversation, even more when that author is someone as fervent and forthright as James Baldwin. The conversations presented here were selected with care—interviewers were close friends to Baldwin, fellow writers or artists, and humans who share similar struggles of being Black in America, and being Black and gay in the world.

I'm sure I'll enjoy this entire collection of last interviews from Penguin Random House.

This is a quick read with a few interviews of James Baldwin. I've recently read two of his books but eager to read more and learn more about his life. I'm a huge fan of Studs Terkel and was delighted to find that the first featured interview in this collection was a Studs feature!

Big Baldwin Fan. This is a good selection of his interviews/conversations, the last being my favorite. If you're read his essays, a lot of the sentiments remain and show up in the book. He does go more in depth about his personal life and how the publication of his novels came about. All very interesting.
And as always, great critique of America, white americans, and the black american experience.

Strong 4.5; I will probably never find words to describe what reading the thoughts of Baldwin does to me
