Ugh. This could’ve been very good. But it was not. Every freaking cliche in the book (no pun intended). Twists and turns and characters that didn’t need to be in the book and more and more and more. Too much. And because there was so much set of huge I knew who was at the bottom of it all.
first half was attention grabbing, second half was a lot of over explaining and pace was slower… would have been better shorter
dark
mysterious
slow-paced
Ended up being just a bit too slow in the development. The twists were okay but not super interesting and since they were developed so slowly, it felt like the whole story was unnecessarily drawn out.
If you’re expecting a fast-paced, page-turning thriller than this might not be the book for you. It is closer to a detective novel, as the police quite literally work to solve a peculiar disappearance that isn’t exactly what it seems.
In all honesty, I was enjoying this book until the last 50 pages. The issue isn’t that “who done it” was predictable, but more that it didn’t really make sense. The character didn’t feel like an integral part of the story. Instead, we got 7 (I exaggerate) third act reveals all expounding back story that could have been added earlier in this 400 page novel. The stakes of who did it and why, just didn’t click for me. The tension fizzled out after the reveal, and although the author tried to keep the action going, it was so bogged down with exposition that is was stilted.
I will say it was a quick read with short chapters. The first half really had my attention. It started to wane somewhere in the middle and the third act simply ruined what was the makings of a nice detective story. Overall, I’m just super disappointed.

As much as I thought I loved this story, the ending ruined it. I figured out who the killer was about halfway thru, but the events that unfolded over the last 100 or so pages surprised me (in a good way!). The ending did not need to happen how it did and if anything, completely detracted from the fucked upness that could’ve been.
The description of this book called it “domestic noir”. I have never heard of that category before but I have to say that it fits this book perfectly. The twists and turns were unexpected and perfectly timed. J.T. Ellison, you rock!
