As a primer on Japan for travel preparation, this earns five stars. If I were reading it for more academic purposes, I might not give it such a high ranking. But for my needs, it's perfect. I plan to carry this book in my suitcase.

The first seven chapters are terrific. They provide commentary and insight into the Japanese culture at a deeper and more informative level than any of the travel guides or numerous online articles I digested before this trip. I will recommend this book to anyone (nerd or no) considering or planning a trip to Japan.

It started out alright but became painfully slow by the end. I was treating it like a chore because it had been lent by a friend and wanted to give it back, but gods, it hurt to get to the end and even then I had to do a fair bit of skimming by the end.

Will give it credit for the intel on festivals. Otherwise I would never have known we were in Japan for a rather important local festival.

Early cultural sections were much better than the history of, say, manga or movies.

Very repetitive in some sections, too.

Excellent book if you're planning on visiting Japan. It demystifies a lot of the odd traditions/cultures/practices of Japan. I picked up this book on the flight back home, so now I have to visit again to checkout some of the cool stuff in this book :P

Get The Geek To The Geisha

This book is a comprehensive and entertaining guide to Japanese culture and society.

The author, Hector Garcia Puigcerver (HGP), provides a deep dive into the history and evolution of Japan, starting from ancient times to the present day.
He also explores the differences between Western and Japanese cultural attitudes and customs, providing interesting insights and comparisons.

The book is further enhanced by its insider tips and recommendations for travel in Japan (later in the book), which are specifically aimed at geeks and fans of Japanese pop culture.

HGP provides a wealth of information on where to find the best anime shops, manga cafes, and other cultural landmarks. The book is also filled with fascinating photographs and illustrations that bring the text to life.

Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in Japan, its culture, and its unique contributions to the world of geekdom.

Whether you're a seasoned traveler or just starting to explore this fascinating country, A Geek in Japan is an excellent guide to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Worth glancing through the photos if you got a physical copy. The eBook layout was quite ugly. The textual content is dull and insipid. Seeing the world through the lens of a white dude is by definition very limited and uninteresting.
