i was expecting to like when he was wicked a lot more than i did. i feel like a lot of people hype up francesca’s story as one of the best in the bridgerton story, and while i did think it was good, i think i may have missed out on the wow factor.
a lot of the bridgerton books reuse the same tropes and situations so i loved that when he was wicked is so different from the others. it’s about francesca marrying the earl of kilmarten, having to deal with the grief of suddenly losing her husband and miscarrying their child and then falling back in love. this book delves into deeper themes and is definitely the more sad bridgerton book. it doesn’t seem like francesca can catch a break, but i loved that julia quinn was willing to put her main character through painful experiences and to then talk about the lasting impact that has on a character. francesca deals with a lot of guilt. guilt about outliving her husband, losing their child, and then eventually, falling in love with her husbands cousin. michael and francesca actually both share that guilt. they don’t feel that they are worthy of their love for each other.
it really was a sweet book and i enjoyed it. i think francesca and michael had the most intense chemistry/tension out of all the bridgerton couples with the exception of maybe kate/anthony. while i thought the chemistry was brilliant, at a certain point i got tired of all the smut scenes and started skipping some of them. i didn’t feel they added to the story and it got to a point where it was too much.
speaking of smut/sex, i wasn’t a fan of the plot line where francesca initially says no to michael’s proposal and then micheal decides that the solution is to seduce francesca so she is then trapped/guilted into marrying him.
