My first Carol Higgins Clark book, and the first in her mystery series about Regan Reilly.

I was expecting more than I got out of this new mystery series, probably because I’ve read so many, but while I thought it would be focused on this new character of Regan, it involved so much more. It almost felt like someone elses mystery more than hers.

Decked is about an investigator who goes to a school reunion in Europe only to find an old schoolmate was murdered. Now she has to chaperone a woman on a cruise back to the states while trying to figure out one big mystery. However, in my opinion, the book was more about a cruise than any sort of mystery. Some parts had me confused as to what my main focus should be on, and often times there were so many characters it was hard to follow them all.

I’m hoping to read more from the series so maybe they start to pick up after we learn more about the character.

This is Carol Higgins Clark's first book and also my first by her (no surprise there since I love to read authors' series in the order they are written!). I found out that her mysteries are, happily, quite different from those her mother writes. I found this book to be a light, campy delight--a combination of episodes of "The Love Boat" and "Murder She Wrote." I must have been in the mood for this kind of book because I can easily see my self not enjoying this kind of book at another time. Sometimes predictable, tried-and-true works!

This is the first of the Regan Reilly mysteries — I’ve read several of the later books in the series so it was fascinating to go back to the beginning and see where (& how) it all started!

I will say, Carol Higgins Clark (hereby referred to as CHC) has changed her writing style tremendously over the course of the series. In this book, there are some of the trademark multiple plot lines that arc and twist and weave together for a seamless conclusion. But compared to later books, this one is a walk in the park. As you progress in this series, CHC’s plots become a lot more convoluted, there’s a lot more story arcs to keep straight, a ton more characters, and there’s also typically a lot less murder.

Book one was more of a typical murder mystery. I’ll be curious to read the next books in the series to see where (& how!) things start to shift.

Slower than I would have liked but still a very well written book. Loved the plot line and the characters. Will definitely continue the series.
