This rating is subject to change with development of the story. I think through most of the book I enjoyed the characters and I liked the direction the story seemed to be going until... the last few chapters. Everything seemed all over the place and suddenly these two characters I’d been invested in and was kind of falling in love with like I had been in love with Audrey Rose and Thomas suddenly became different people. Emilia’s change in character made some sense, but Wrath’s was... I didn’t believe he’d do what he did given everything he’d said and done before. I’m sure KM has plans for these two, but right now, I feel like her Stalking Jack the Ripper series started out stronger than this series, which I sense is going to rely heavily on the following books to create a strong story.

When I first started reading this book I was struggling. It felt repetitive and slow. BUT ….. the more I read the more I needed to keep reading.

The story opens in the prologue on a dark and stormy night as two young twin witches (also known as streghe), named Emilia and Vitoria, chanting protection spells to ward off the Malgavi (also known as the Wicked).

When Vitoria is found brutally murdered, Emilia seeks vengeance by using dark magic that is strictly forbidden. She summons Wrath, one of the Wicked and he claims to be on Emilia’s side about finding out who is murdering the witches in the island. However, it appears that Wrath is not being overly truthful towards Emilia.

I will admit that by the end of this book I was left with frustration, anger, and a general sense of needing to read the second book in this series. How dare Kerri Maniscalco leave the ending of the book like that! Why? That is not what I wanted! Well done, Kerri, you have now drawn me in completely to this series and I am bound and determined to find out what happens to Emilia and Wrath.

I think my main issue with this book is that I really didn’t feel grounded into the story. There is absolutely no concept of time, tones between characters are bland and identical, and the way the characters reacted to things really felt unrealistic. Specific information is also very evidently given at convenient moments rather than shown prior or embedded into the world building. The only character that truly captured my attention is killed off in like the second chapter so... yeah. I had high expectations for this following the praise I’ve seen.

It might have made it to five stars if Wrath's personality wasn't completely based on –supposedly– sassy remarks I personally found cringey and being shirtless for the first half of the book for no apparent reason
