I really liked the Guo Jing, he is very endearing. I wasn't expecting the story to have so much drama and suspense, but I was pleasantly surprised. The storyline between Charity Bao and the prince was my favorite part of the book since his 'hidden' intentions towards her was the more riveting storyline imo. I really liked the focus on personal family/mentor/lover dynamics that were introduced and look forward to seeing them develop in the next novel.

This was a very interesting story though it can be a bit confusing at times. I am intrigued to see how it continues.

This is for the audiobook but my god, Daniel York Loh is such a bland narrator. He can change the voices and they are good, but he sounds like he is reading a dry dissertation from a topic he couldn't care less. I never felt excited, annoyed or even invested in the story or the characters.

I'm going to get the epub and see how it goes, but this is as far as I go with this version of the story.

It is an adventure but also historical fiction. It is kung fu magic and loyalty and honor!! It is heroic!! Such a fun and magical world!! I loved it!! I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series!!!

It was fun! It's not really my favorite subgenre to read - the 1950s are not my go-to decade for adventure stories, because of their general emphasis on plot and fighting over character arcs - but there's a lot of fun stuff here. That feels a little disrespectful considering what this series is to their intended Chinese-speaking audience but, yk, I kind of feel the same way about Lord of the Rings, so...

The way there are multiple female characters, with different personalities and, insofar as any of the characters get arcs besides Guo Jing, their own arcs... that fills my heart with happiness. Jade Han is my favorite, but Lotus! I love her! Lotus is a b*tch and I like her so much!

SpoilerYou do have to question why Mercy wants to marry the stupid arrogant prince so badly, though. I know they both fight good but come on. He has you and your dad in a cage. Have some self-respect.

It would be 4 stars if it weren't for the bizarre choice to translate some (but not all) names literally.
