Such a fun swashbuckling martial arts adventure. It ends on a hell of a cliff hanger so I’ll have to read the next one soon.

The story is really fun, but I think a lot got lost in the translation, which is why I'm docking a star. Looking forward to the next book with a different translator. Lots to absorb in the story and very glad the author put a list of characters with descriptions as a reference.

I enjoyed reading this book as I like fantasy, but I've never read much Kung Fu. I suspect it would have been better in Chinese, I don't think the book translated all that well. All around solid but not spectacular, and I'm glad I read it because it broadened my horizons.

Comparisons to Lord of the Rings may be slightly misleading but I found this a really fun and gripping story in its own right. If you've seen any wuxia movies this is pretty much one of those in novel form, and it's a good one. The action scenes, featuring numerous characters and weapons and fighting styles that could all get a little muddled in the hands of a lesser writer or translator, are narrated with great clarity and flow, aided by some charmingly oldschool illustrations. Although he's not the smartest or most complex guy in the world I found Guo Jing a pretty likeable protagonist and am greatly enjoying his journey to become a kung fu master (although as this volume ends he's still got a long way to go).

Will definitely be checking out the rest of the series!

The story itself was fine, but the vast cast of characters made it hard to understand who was who sometimes. Realistically I’m putting this book down with the intention of returning to it at some point in the future. Hopefully, idk.
