The pacing is extremely confusing, and the characters occasionally only make sense. I feel like I might be missing some cultural context that would help in reading this book, but overall I kept reading to see if I would ever stop being baffled on the next page.
A Hero Born is the beginning of a truly wonderful story that scratched an itch I did not realize I had. Once you get used to the somewhat cringeworthy translated names, you enter a hidden world of martial arts filled with interesting characters, memorable fights, and awesome settings.
For those of you who are into martial arts light novels and/or manga/manhua/manhwa; This is going to be right up your alley. Why? Because I'm pretty sure that those martial arts novels etc. have all (directly or indirectly) taken inspiration from Jin Yong's writing!
Although I mentioned that the translation is somewhat cringeworthy at times, I still feel grateful for the effort put into this translation. Without it, I would not have been able to dive into this amazing series!

I loved it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was reminiscent of the old kung-fu movies we rent to watch on the VHS. I was 10 pages in and suddenly I was back in my childhood days "practicing" the kung-fu moves in front of the mirror. Even though the ending was a bit abrupt, I can't wait to continue the journey in the sequel.
