Dear Throwback,
I was not expecting a lot from you. You seemed to be brain candy and felt a bit shallow to me from your description. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth you brought, and the perspective you offered. I think my favorite part about you was that you showed how far the current generation (hopefully) has come.  You had so many truths about what high school was like in the '90's. I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me is when Sam said that she thought all of the '90's movies were exaggerating about the cliques, and the causal racism and sexism. I felt like you told a lot of the truths that I lived through. When I shared that observation with my book club, we were able to get into an interesting conversation about how high school was different for them, and how they don't think that high school has come as far as you portrayed.  But at least you left me feeling hopeful for this current generation, and their perspective on our world.

I really liked this one! It was really fun and there’s so much depth! It’s an immigrant story but also not. It’s about an average American girl getting to know her all-American mom. I also stan the light unexpected romance.

This book is the perfect mix of Back to the Future and Clueless. This book deals with the complex relationships of three generations of women in Samantha’s family.

After getting into the worst fight of her life with her mother, Samantha Kang calls for an Uber to take her to school; however, she ends up time-traveling back to 1995. She quickly realizes that she is in the wrong time period when she gets to her homeroom class and sees her own mother as a teenager. Samantha realizes that the only way to return to the present is to help her mom win homecoming queen, but it’s easier said than done. Samantha begins to understand her mother more as she realizes the environment that her mom grew up in, both at school and at home, and begins to understand why her mother’s relationship with Halmoni is complicated.

I love complex family dynamics as they always tend to make me a bit emotional, and this story was no different. I read this book for my YA Publishing class in my graduate program, and I’m looking forward to discussing it.

AHHH I really enjoyed this book! I loved how the plot put a spin on freaky Friday. The characters were alright though and I found it to feel a little long.
