Firstly, I have to say that I am loving the new cover designs because I feel like they definitely fit the series a bit better. This, however, is my least favorite of Chupeco's series. That is not to say that I did not enjoy it completely, but it certainly felt anticlimactic.

I received an ecopy of this through netgalley; however all opinions are my own.

This book is not very memorable, by any means-I read this just a few days ago, and I don't really remember much of it.

This second book continues to build out the characters in a fun way, but it's a bit anticlimactic with, again, too much prophesying.

It's enjoyable nonetheless, but it's certainly not an outstanding book.

Is this a "good" (literarily meritorious) book? No. Is Chupeco having a great time writing it? Yes, and I love that for them. Did I have fun reading it? Well, I sure enjoyed all the shout-outs to tumblr memes, and I'll pick up the next one when it's out.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy of An Unreliable Magic in exchange for an honest review.
When I read the first book, I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t my favorite of Chupeco’s books. I feel similarly about this sequel. While I had a good time while I was reading it, I don’t think that the story will stick with me in any lasting way. I definitely think there are people out there that will absolutely love this book. It is full of representation that I cannot say if it’s accurate or not. There’s a host of lgbt identities in this book and they were for the most part made to seem normal and casual which I liked.
I think the pacing of the story was well done. It was full of action and mystery. The lead up to the big climax was well done i think. Chupeco did a great job dropping bits and pieces to keep me wondering what was really going on.
Overall, I had fun reading this. The ending made it seem like there was opportunities for more books in the series. I think would probably pick up any future installments were they to come out.

An Unreliable Magic picks back up where it left off. It asks questions about how do we make a change, what is the right course of action. We can think we're doing the right thing, but it's impossible to figure out sometimes. When we have to pick between our friends and protecting them, between the search for the truth and forgiveness.

As with the first one, there's a lot going on, and this one relies on you having read the first one (and remembering everything). I'm still fascinated by the magic system, and the mashup of all the fairy tales/myths, but whoa nelly is there a lot to take in. I couldn't read it all at once, I had to do it in parts.
But - I still really like the characters, and I will still read the next book.
