Just a fun and silly read. Some of the poems hit a little close to home with how serious it can be but overall, it made me giggle.
Another worthwhile reread. In typical Shel Silverstein style, there were some familiar classics and a few oddballs that must've sailed clear over my head as a kid.
Shel never ceases to amaze me with his poetry. Rereading it as an adult brings new meaning to his already wonderful words.
Thanks to a post by a friend, I was reminded of "A Light in the Attic".
I dug out my original copy from when I was young, complete with my own illustrations. The pages are battered, the dust jacket is worn. As I flipped through I found poems and drawings waiting to greet me like old friends - the walrus with braces, the polar bear on the Frigidaire, the baby bat who feared the light, too many kids in this tub.
One of my all time favorites was always "They've Put A Brassiere In The Camel". Something about the expression on the camel along with the second to last line always made me laugh and laugh and laugh.
And it turns out it still does.

Sometimes I get all high and mighty about these, and think my students would be better off if they would read Serious Poetry. But you can't deny that kids are charmed by these. They are funny and frequently dark and wonderful.
I have fond memories of reading this book to my children when they were younger. The condition of my book shows a lot of use. My favorite poem by Shel Silverstein continues to be Quick Trip. I still remember it all of these years later along with The Climbers and Rockabye. This time around I particularly enjoyed Wild Strawberries. Cute book!
