3.5 Coward Stars ⭐
Spicy Level: 🌶️/5 (We get some sexy time but it's fade to black)

So I initially went into this highly sceptical and doubtful that I'd find any redeeming qualities to make me OBSESSED with this series, as I see so many people are... and while I am not obsessed and still think past me was slightly crazy and delusional...this book was definitely better than book 1!

I don't abore Celaena Lillian Elentiya Aelin or whatever the crap her name is but I don't hate her as much as I did in book 1. I liked this more as she wasn't as infuriating as in book 1 since she seemed to grow up. She wasn't obsessed with her clothing and looks, or not being invited to events. I guess being called a "coward" by your friend for not serving the greater cause can do that to you. She turns quiet ruthless when certain events occur in the book.

While I don't really like love triangles this one was....actually no... I still hate love triangles. The unnecessary angst - to me, it still feels like such a cop-out "not like the other girls" YA trope that seems too easy to do...I prefer Dorian to Chaol and I cannot wait for when Shadow Daddy becomes a full-fledged Shadow Daddy!

The writing (annoying Celaena aside) is excellent, there is something about the world-building and general writing of SJM that can suck you in and lull you. It's very well written and the main reason I am continuing on my listening journey. The plot starts to pick up in this as there has been more time to develop the world and things start falling into place. A few mysteries are solved as we finally learn how everything that has been happening is tied together. But we are still presented with numerous twists and turns and a cliffhanger.

Overall still confused as to why I needed to have read 2 books to start being hooked on a series but I can feel that this little fishy is almost falling for the bait of Throne of Glass's Fantasy World...

Your Tropes:
▶ Love Triangle
▶ Hidden Identity
▶ Unexpected Twists and Turns
▶ Unique Magic System and Intricate World Building
▶ Who did this to you (kinda)

chaol pisses me off, am i alone in this?? selfish mf that “wants to keep her safe” just makes decisions without consulting her. then GOTCHA ofc she’s the gd heir to the throne of teressen!! ofc she knows what’s going on and he just didn’t trust her omg. i’m annoyed with both male leads tbh. at the end of the first book i was team chaol, end of second book, team dorian kinda. more like team celeana going on her own journey. i gotta say, i was gooped and gagged cause i totally forgot about the missing princess. i read that foreshadowing on a plane so it really didn’t sink in. so i was mind blown by it. love that tho, maybe i should pay less attention when i read so the twists really gag me. fun read! and pretty quick at the end there.

It’s not my favorite, but this book has officially gotten me invested in the series!

<spoilers>
I saw her true name coming, there were a lot of hints throughout the book. But the fact that she is fae, was a bit of a surprise, looking back, there were a few hints for that too, but I just missed them cause I was waiting for the name reveal.

But also, Dorian has magic? That was a shocker!!! I can’t wait to see how all the magic plays out!

So this one started a little bit slow for me, but

by the last 150ish pages its safe to say I was a little obsessed. Not kidding the climax of the book had me so mad and celebratory at the same time I was screaming about it lmao

Also the CHARACTERS how am I supposed to choose between dorian and chaol when their both such amazing characters?

Just wasn't enough to be a 5 star BUT it was close.

Rereading TOG might actually be more enjoyable than the first time through. Knowing the characters better and being able to pick up on the foreshadowing of events to come has been really fun. The second book has such a great ending that really sets the series into motion!
