Very enjoyable! Slow at times and some parts definitely could have been cut down but overall I really enjoyed the book and I’m looking forward to the next one!

I loved the way the characters were written, they all feel very real to me and I was very immersed in all of their choices and actions. Rand is the most boring character, however, which is interesting for a protagonist haha.

There is a good story in here, unfortunately it is buried under a lot of junk. The book feels like a good 400 page book stretched out to make 800 pages. The plot had its good moments, but it moved far too slowly. It felt like wading through mud, it got somewhere but very slowly. There was far too much emphasis on unnecessary exposition and world-building instead of making the plot interesting.

The biggest problem I had was with the characters. To be honest, I don't think I've cared less about any set of characters in any novel. Despite having 800 pages to do so, these characters have absolutely no depth or detail, I honest don't care about any of them. Even the main character Rand, doesn't have a single personality trait. The rest are completely one-dimensional.

The dialogue was really strange in the book, despite being best friends, the teens never chatted or spoke like friends, everything they said was completely functional: "Where are we going? What is that? What is happening?". The other people who properly talk to each other are Egwene and Nynaeve but their conversations are never included.

Finally, what the hell was Jordan's problem with women? Did he want us to hate all the female characters? While the boys are bland but likable, the women are petty, whiny, untrustworthy, nagging, fikle etc. They have hardly a single positive trait, other than being attractive. Nynaeve does nothing except complain, moan and snap at people. Moiraine is mysterious and untrustworthy. Egwene is the worst, ever time she is mentioned we are given a new reason to dislike her. She is moody, jealous, blames Rand for no reason, expects Perrin to lead but still bosses him around, ditches her lifelong friends as soon as she meets Moiraine, forgets about Perrin and Rand as soon as she meets Arram, stamps her foot and cries "men!". Jordan relies on gender roles that went out of date decades ago.

I might read the second book, but I'm in no rush to do so.
