A well written & fascinating book. Powerful and painful to read. I might not always agree with Laing but I was always challenged to think more deeply.

This book is a revelation on several levels. Loved it. I haven’t felt this way about a book since Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine; that I am being shown something new with which to make/ remake my sense of history and the world I live in.

Olivia Laing, everybody, alle sammen!!!! Tilbake til hovedinteresse nr. 1 & grunnen til alle livets valg de siste 10 årene: mind/body-problemet. Nå føler jeg meg fri!

i appreciate everything this book set out to do, and found the coverage of topics fascinating. from the history of psychoanalysis, to new-age medicine, to the many social movements of the last century, to genocide, this leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the policing of bodies throughout time, and to the varied experiences of inhabiting one. i especially enjoyed the discussions of art, although i wish i was more familiar with many of the artists discussed in this. while i was really hooked by what this book set out to do, i did find myself struggling to keep invested as it went on, and i cant really put my finger on why. i think the writing was solid, and was especially good in the first and last sections, perhaps because they brought all of the ideas together. whereas, in the middle sections, the discussions started to feel a little meandering, and so i was losing the thesis a bit.

I found this interesting but a bit scattered. I enjoyed learning more about Laing herself and her path, and there were many interesting facts in this book but it also felt a bit loose and not as strong as some of her previous books, certainly not as much as Lonely City for example.
