I couldn't put it down, so I read it all in one go (with a dinner break). I laughed and I cried.

The pieces in this book got more personal, and better, as the book progressed. If the idea of a 32-year-old with a fairly unremarkable life writing a memoir doesn't put you off, it's a solid vacation read.

Highly episodic stories drawn mostly from Birbiglia's youth and early start into doing stand-up comedy. Many read like one of his comedy routines, and those suffer a bit from the lack of his style of delivery. A few were literally so funny I laughed until my abdominal muscles were sore. In all, a very enjoyable, short book, worth trying even if you've not heard of him.

Birbiglia's my favorite comedian, so obviously I'm biased here, but I really enjoyed this back when I read it. A lot of it overlaps with his stage material, and you can't beat the experience of hearing him deliver it, but some of these stories are new (or extended versions of stage stories), so there's definitely value in buying it. Birbigs is a huge influence on my writing style (for personal non-fiction, not narrative stuff) because he understands how to take a completely mundane story and turn it into something hilarious just through the way you deliver it.

It was fine. But I hoped it would be funnier, based on hearing him on This American Life.

I prefer these stories when he tells them live, but reading this book was like visiting with cherished friends.

I enjoyed this but not as much as I had enjoyed hearing his spoken stories in the past. There was some familiar material from those gigs but most of it was all new to me & pretty funny.

Some good laugh out loud parts...but his stand up is still better. Check him out on Netflix and HBO!
