Wow. This book was one of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve ever read. The way everything was portrayed made me feel like I understood perfectly, and the issues discussed and represented were put into perspective. I loved this story, and it’s so so sad but makes you reflect on life. This is so lighthearted read- that’s for sure. It would’ve been a 4 star, but just wasn’t QUITE there but such a great story. (I come back to the review and change someday- I haven’t decided yet:))

I loved the exploration of race in this book, as I learnt more about Chinese culture, as well as the interesting sub-plots about immigration, illicit affairs and school life. Though, it can be hard to follow at times due to the constant flipping before and after Lydia’s death.

This book is one of my favorites, though I preferred the first 3/4 of the book more than the ending. All of the characters are written very good. They are all so different,  but lovable in their own ways. Whilst reading you’ll find yourself changing your opinion on them continuously.
