I'm looking forward to the next book, what happens with Brian and Mary Ann, worried about mouse, and hoping Anna goes back to lesbos.
Marginally better than I remembered it, mainly because I know that Maupin didn't manage to ruin his series with his premature plan to kill it off: a miserable Michael making the most of what he has, even as treatment for HIV is improving and becoming marginally more affordable, but with the subtext of impending death; a completely unsympathetic and ridiculous character assassination of Mary Ann; an unlikely retconning of Brian that ignores his developments of books three and four and doesn't take Mary Ann's own treachery into consideration.
The Lesbos storyline is nice, even though it's the last we'll ever hear from Mona and the Madrigal storyline doesn't quite get the justice it deserves.
This is a bittersweet book that doesn't make all of the right choices, but socially and politically it was a difficult time. Maupin would go on to purge much of his political (and justifiable) anger in Maybe The Moon. As a final chapter in the Tales of the City cycle, Sure of You isn't very good. Now we have three more entries, some redemptions, and fewer things to worry about except the march of time.

More mature characters, more mature relationships and more mature storyline but as true and insightful as ever.
