I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. I definitely wasn't expecting to cry!!

Disappointing. Not enough time was spent with any one character left the story feeling very surface level. Plus the fact that the book is told mainly in letters puts distance between the reader and the story and prevents the reader from getting emotionally involved.

I have been not-so-patiently waiting to read this book for what seems years, and it did not disappoint. I love airplanes and WWII stories and badass girls and this has all three. The majority of the characters are also real people, which I also love in a book.

But I think one of my very favourite threads in the story was Pasha's friendship with the fellow soldier who wanted to be a priest. Their worldviews are so different in many ways, yet they both are gentle souls who love beauty and would rather be doing anything else besides fighting.

Probably irrelevant, but also true: The rabid Rose Under Fire fangirl in me loved getting a clearer glimpse into the kind of world Irina came from, and why she couldn't ever go back after Ravensbrück.

AMONG THE RED STARS is filled with everything I love: action and thrills, firm female friendships, wartime tragedy, and a wonderful format that includes both narration and letters that plop the reader right into the story alongside the characters and their feelings (so many feels!). I love that it's very much based on history while also delving into the fiction of these individuals to paint a gripping read that doesn't let you go until the end.

I love this. So much. I learned about the so-called "Night witches" from a song by the Swedish metal band Sabaton. Ever since then, I've always wanted more. This did everything and more and I love it. So much. I love the character development and the letters and everything.

Terrific read that seems to capture the war and experiences

The book was an interesting look into the Soviet side of the war, and utterly unique in depicting the amazing exploits of the Soviet night bombers. I’d definitely recommend to people looking for unique perspectives of women in history.

A fictional story based on truth, which was wonderful and one of the very few YA novels that cover the Night Witches. It encourgaed discussions about aircraft, bombers and WWII between my boyfriend and I. A lot of it would be boring for some as it was on technical details about aircraft and flight.
But it was a book I could discuss with him, and it was written through a mix of letters and the character's POV.
I really really enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it!
