Fruits Basket‘s third Ultimate Edition release, comprising the fifth and sixth volumes, is just amazing. Both volumes in this omnibus are just brilliant, and I am here to tell you why! If you don’t know, these reviews after the first 2 volumes are full of spoilers, so don’t read this review if you haven’t read volumes 5 and 6 of Fruits Basket. Let’s dive in now, shall we?
Volume 5: Shigure invites Tohru, Yuki, Kyo and Hatori to a summer house. Tohru thinks that Yuki and Kyo might be upset at her, but she later finds out that they aren’t. At the summer house, Shigure invites Ayame, despite being told not to. Later, Tohru meets the tiger of the Zodiac, Kisa Sohma, a young girl who can’t talk due to the constant bullying she receives. Hanajima and her younger brother, Megumi, also have a run in with the Prince Yuki Fan Club, which was somewhat amusing. Overall, this was a pretty good volume.
Volume 6: But the real stand out of this omnibus is the sixth volume! Kazuma Sohma reunites with Kyo, and…things happen. More specifically, Kazuma forces Kyo to reveal his “true form”. But while Tohru sees this true form…she doesn’t try to reject Kyo. Tohru stills wants be together with Kyo, which I found really sweet. Then we have another amusing chapter at the end (Is this a trend for this series? On a reread I’m noticing that the volumes tend to end on more comedic chapters.), where Tohru and Yuki visit Ayame’s shop to hilarious results. Amazing indeed.
Fruits Basket gets better with each volume. I can’t really say anything else other than that. However, I will return to the Yen Press translation with the next volume, so that should be interesting. Can’t wait to read more of this series!
