4⭐️
Really debated on a high 3⭐️ here but I enjoyed it too much to rate it in the 3s.
From beginning to end I couldn’t stop visualizing the triffids as anything other than piranha plants lol. The idea of walking/sneaky plants that can whip you hard enough to kill you/poison you from ~10ft away is terrifying.
The survival/looting aspect was very interesting and is one of my favorite parts of a societal collapse story (growing up with Dawn of the Dead on DVD that I watched over and over probably is the root of that interest). On that same note, the natural destruction of buildings and manmade structures was very easy to visualize which was satisfying.
The main thing I didn’t like about the book was that there wasn’t enough talk of the triffids. I guess I was expecting a zombie like presence from them but that may have been my own preconceived ideas underwhelming me.
Also next time I hear of an opportunity to watch a meteor shower I’m definitely going to be thinking of this book..

I can see the beginning of a new genre here, but just that. The characters are fairly thin, the action at a bucolic pace, the ideas somewhat half … grown.

after finding The Chrysalids pretty meh i was surprised and pleased by how much i liked this! the writing style can be annoying and BILL certainly is and there is plenty of dubious shit but the story is cool and so are the triffids
There is an inability to sustain the tragic mood, a phoenix quality of the mind.
I chose (I paid for) this book because references to the Triffids have long been part of my cultural life. As a Mormon missionary in Japan some 20 years ago, many missionaries called Japanese schoolgirls "Triffs." After reading this, I'm still not sure why. I have my suspicions, which I'll not go into here.
I really did not enjoy this. I had in mind, another excellent post-apocalyptic work written around the same time: Richard Matheson's I am Legend. They touch on many similar themes, but Triffids feels like it was written hastily, all the words and ideas disgorged onto the page, where Matheson's work feels carefully crafted--each word is the right one.
