This book was rich with atmosphere, which is what gets me every time!! It's a modern gothic thriller that sucked me in and wouldn't let me go. I loved all of the bookish aspects to this - Helen's leather satchel, doing one's work in a library, a modern character who wrote his story with a fountain pen dipped into an inkpot, and all of the research done to find books and letters that told the story of Melmoth.

This was full of bookish fun and I can't wait to read another by this author!!

Let’s hope this one works out; I’ve made the classic mistake of buying both of Perry’s books before reading either of them because they both sounded interesting and the first one was highly lauded and popular. Then I’ve read her second book first because it sounded phenomenal and was the shorter of the two. Unfortunately I found it uneventful, slow-going and I didn’t enjoy it at all. Now I’m stuck with the problem of reading her first book. Do I? Or should I cut my loses and put it in the resale box?

Boring. Supposed to be gothic, but it didn’t feel gothic at all.
