I picked up Clean by Alia Trabucco Zeran because it was a relatively short book and it was available to listen to on Bookbeat and it worked brilliantly as an audio book!
A maid, Estela is in a sealed room (she assumes a police cell) and the book is her just talking to the policemen she assumes are listening to her from behind the mirrored glass. She talks about how she got the maid job just before the birth of the couple’s first baby. She talks about the work she did and the relationship of the family which she was privy to as the maid who was often perceived to be invisible.
She talks about a stray dog she adopted and about her relationship with the often difficult child, the one who we learn at the beginning of the book has died.
Clean was such a clever book - the narrator Silvana Kane really brought Estela to life. I listened to her narration with a real sense of foreboding as Estela often changes direction as she tells her story, sometimes going back to her childhood which she assures us is all relevant.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It is a great book for those of you who enjoy translated fiction.
