Although Mary Anning did not discover any dinosaurs while she was alive (the title is misleading since the prehistoric animals she discovered are NOT dinosaurs), this book still showcases her discoveries. It is a cute and inspiring story with some adorable illustrations!

I have been absolutely fascinated by Mary Anning for a few years now, and reading about her pretty much always brings me great joy. Unfortunately, I didn't know anything about her when I was a kid, and I know I would have been fascinated by her life and work, especially during my prehistoric fascination phase. Dinosaur Lady by Linda Skeers, illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens, is the exact kind of book that would have fascinated me as a child, and while I'm sorry I didn't get to read it then, I'm glad that it's available now.

This picture book biography offers up Mary Anning's story in a way that kids can understand and relate to, providing facts from her life story. I really appreciated that it focused on more than just her first discovery, as a number of books I've read seem to focus only on her childhood discoveries rather than acknowledging her lifelong works in the new field of paleontology. The timeline and fossil facts included at the end will be incredibly helpful for children looking for an overall picture of her life or understanding of the fossils Anning found. The illustrations are warm and charming and really help to bring her story to life, as well as provide examples of the fossils Anning found.

Any child interested in paleontology, geology, science, adventure, history, or dinosaurs should find something to enjoy and learn from in this fun new picture book biography of Mary Anning. I would definitely recommend it.

Mary Anning could be otherwise called the Mother of Paleontology. Her early discoveries helped establishment scientists and scholars understand the age of the earth and that species could potentially go extinct. This book is very engaging- my two and a half year old announced halfway through, "I love this book!". The illustrations are perfect for young readers and also do a fantastic job of highlighting Mary's accomplished life.

The book also includes a timeline and extra information for further learning for older youth readers. I highly recommend this book. This is one I want to own for our own collection.

I was so excited when I first saw this book online! I waited for my library to get a copy and I checked it out as soon as it was done processing.

This was a very good Mary Anning biography. Lots of information about her life and discoveries, including how she was excluded from most of the scientific community because she was a women. Her father wasn't mentioned except for in an author's note at the end, but the focus was on her life and not so much her family. I enjoyed the art and color palette.

Oh. My. Gosh. Educational!

Dinosaur Lady is about Mary Anning, the first paleontologist and OMG this book just screams me! Sure, I'm an adult but I still love an educational children's books full of pretty pictures! Seriously, this book got my nerd senses tingling.

My positives:
1. The design of the cover is GORGEOUS. Patterns, bright colours that draw attention, bones for the title - it all just SCREAMS awesome sauce. And I haven't even opened the book yet!

2. The illustrations inside the book are even better. It's like walking into a museum but instead you're opening up a book. They are memorizing and stunning and gorgeous. So beautiful!

3. Educational terminology like ammonites and belemnites are words I haven't heard since my school days. Even the official names, petricola pholadiformis, made me get thrilled. So much smartiness in one book! And yes, I put a fake word for comedy's sake. I'm hilarious.

4. The story telling and plot is very intriguing and fun to follow. I was really interested since I didn't know Mary's story and now I want to research her!

5. Girl power! Who doesn't love a good story about a girl being totally wicked cool?

6. There are also facts at the back of this book. Who doesn't love a good appendix for learning? Especially when they include big words with definitions, timelines and more educational goodies for young learners!

My negatives:
1. Mary's design doesn't perfectly match with the backgrounds, but that isn't much of a negative. It's more of an artistic pet peeve of mine. It affects the story in zero ways, but it's still something to consider. I don't think the target audience, kids, will care. Only very, very picky adults.

Overall, this book is totally awesome! Whether it's for a bed time reading, general story time or for educational purposes, I would highly recommend adding this book to your shelf! I will definitely be looking for more books like this one in the near future!

Five out of five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for giving me an opportunity to read this book!

An engaging book about one of the earliest paleontologists, Mary Anning, who discovered five previously unknown dinosaurs in her lifetime, as well as many minor discoveries that changed how scientists looked at the past- she discovered dinosaur poop, y'all! Though she didn't get all the credit she deserved at the time, in 2010 she was recognized by the Royal society as one of the ten British women who have most influenced the history of science. The story is interesting, and should intrigue boys and girls alike, especially those who are into dinosaurs. The text is followed by a "bits and facts" spread about dinosaurs and fossils, a timeline of Anning's life, and an author's note with more information. The illustrations are vibrant and filled with lively detail, and punctuate the text well.
