Although I’ve been a GR member for many years, 2018 marked my first attempts at reviewing here. I expected to find an outlet for my frustrations with pieces I hated and a way to share my passion for those I loved. What I didn’t expect was to find a community of like-minded bookworms, eager to also share their own experiences. It has been validating and exciting to make such profound connections. In addition, I’ve also discovered that by accepting the responsibility to review, I’ve paid far more attention to what I read. I notice details and nuances that I would have missed just a year ago. With all of that said, I’m sharing my top 10 reads for 2018, and I’m sending a heartfelt Happy New Year to each and every one of you! Thank you for teaching me the secret handshake and accepting me into the fold.
10. Relatively Normal by Whitney Dineen
9. The Way the World Ends by Jess Walter
8. The Great Escape by Jo Watson
7. Method 15/33 by Shannon Kirk
6. Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
5. Bird Box by Josh Malerman
4. The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp
3. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
2. The Financial Lives of the Poets by Jess Walter
1. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas ~ This was the most profound read of the year for me. It overwhelmed me to the point of not even being able to pen a review for fear of not doing it justice. If you haven’t read this, you absolutely MUST!

2018, my first full year on Goodreads
This is all the books I rated 4-5 stars (and honorable three stars) in the order I read them.
Note: novellas under a hundred pages and rereads do not count for best of the month. Any book with an * to the right of it is a reread.
Reading goal=50 books
January: in which I create an extremely unrealistic release tbr.

I'm not good at reading. Scratch that. I read quickly, and I enjoy reading, but I'm not good at making myself do it unless forced to not work, forced to take downtime. Otherwise, there are always things to do, whether that's working, catching up on business tasks, running, skiing, biking, paddling, playing with our puppy...I'm just not very good at forced downtime.
I think I read fully half of the 52 books I read this year in a few bursts—a week here, a week there. Quite literally, actually, as we made a point of taking off for a week at a few points this past year, spending a week at a time in the back of our truck. Forced to not work, and only fit enough to spend so many hours active each day, we read and played cribbage.
That will be one of my favorite memories of 2018, actually: warm summer days spent soaking in a river or lake after time on trails, interspersed with cribbage games and reading in the sun or napping in the back of the truck.
I'm setting a lower goal for 2019, not because I necessarily want to read less, but because I'm aware that having adopted a puppy in October, the needs of a dog already force more downtime in the form of time with her; she's a bundle of energy enough to need a few hours of go time each day, and she's still not very good at letting us read in bed, constantly needing to be the center of attention and all.
But three books a month seems doable, and not that much less than a book a week, and maybe I'll even do a better job of consistently reading this next year, of spreading them out. And if not, well I can always make another plan next year, right?

Overall , it was an enjoyable read year.
Happy reading my peeps! Hope 2019 brings more Goodreads.
As far as a Year in Books goes, 2018 was highly successful with 87,251 pages read across 192 books making an average of 452 pages per book. Admittedly, that includes some entire trilogies that have also been recorded individually... I may need to think about that particular aspect of my recording for this next year. By and large, I have made an effort to put some semblance of a review together for every book read this year, although some of them are admittedly short reviews indeed.
It was also a year for carefully laid plans and then the complete destruction of these upon the loss of the kindle. But for the first two thirds of the year at least, I was reading on a schedule with each month having a different rule. It made for interesting reading and forced me to focus my attention each month, but not so specifically that it became tiresome or tedious. January and July were for physical books only, February and August re-reads of old favourites focusing on Lois Bujold's fantastic worlds and Robin Hobb respectively. March, June and September had me focusing on random numbers in my unread kindle collection drawn from a group forum, April had a goal of three non-fictions and May was dedicated to books that are 'out of my comfort zone'.
This had some excellent aspects and some distinctly more annoying ones. I certainly read many more books that I either wouldn't have gotten around to or was simply ignoring, I also read many that were so far out of my comfort zone and yet were really very good. The random numbers months didn't work so well however and in fact ended up being some of my lowest rated months. I did however learn an important lesson; stop buying or downloading cheap/free crap from Bookbubs and other similar sites. Chances are there is a reason it is cheap or free and that reason is that it is crap. Ok, I found a few diamonds, but they were vastly outweighed by the dross I had to wade through in those months.
There are a few special books or series that merit a specific mention however. I started the year with Peter Hamilton's books, The Abyss Beyond Dreams and Night Without Stars which are two stunningly perfect science fiction novels. Also in the land of science fiction, Leviathan Wakes by James S.A Corey and Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky both deserve a special mention with the former being a wonderfully drawn complex science fiction epic and Dogs of War being both thought provoking and harrowing in a slightly more young adult way. I enjoyed A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas, although the first wasn't as engaging as this sequel, but little in fantasy/science fiction could compare with The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison which blew my mind. It is a rich tapestry of humans in a desolate and hopeless world, excellently written and wonderfully executed.
Any books by Luis Bujold or Robin Hobb are also always worth a look, and I really enjoyed my re-reads of the Vorkosigan saga and the Farseer trilogy respectively. I also re-read The Lies of Locke Lamora and sequel by Scott Lynch, which are fantastic novels despite his potty mouth and The Sword of Truth early series by Terry Goodkind. I was originally disappointed by the first in this series, but thankfully the next three books were as good as I remembered them, although somehow I had forgotten the sexual violence. My first read of the New Year is to be the final book out in the Lock Lamora series and I am currently thoroughly enjoying it. Of course, my re-read of The Stand cannot be forgotten; that is a book that will remain at the top of my lists.
The Only Witness by Pamela Beason was an interesting take on the crime and court genre and was a surprisingly good read, but in the crime genre The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund came out on top, although it is both disturbing and morbid with a focus on paedophilia and child trade that some will find excessively uncomfortable reading. The Lizzy Gardner series by T.R. Ragen is also a disturbing but excellently written crime series, with a focus on serial killers. Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry also takes a focus on sexual offenders, but in a very different context as you meet Noah, a teenage boy whose family is destroyed when he admits to molesting young girls. This was a book that truly forced me to re-consider some of my deepest held preconceptions.
Us Against You by Frederik Bearman is a worthy successor to the powerful and emotive Beartown and is beautifully written and stunningly translated. For a book about ice hockey in a small town, it somehow ends up being so very much more. Backman's writing makes most other authors look clumsy in comparison and his characterisations can make you weep. It isn't a 'young adult' book at heart, but the focus on the teenage characters would also make it eminently suitable for the older teenage reader. Other young adult novels worthy of note this year are Faceless by Alyssa B. Sheinmel and A Bitter Pill by Tiffany Gholar, both of which focus on adolescent mental health but in very different ways I flew through both of these novels in a day.
And somewhere along the lines, I also managed to fit in some historical fiction with Ken Follett playing a significant role. I was enthralled by the second in his Century Trilogy; Winter of the World, so it was a pity I found the finale so tiresome. Mad Blood Stirring by Simon Mayo is a well written and interesting view of an often forgotten period of English and American history, whilst Maureen Jennings writes some really fascinating murder mysteries in the Murdoch Mysteries, set in late nineteenth century Canada. Finally Wild Cards, an anthology orchestrated by George R.R. Martin blurs the lines between historical and fantasy, as he takes you into a history where an alien virus struck the Earth in the aftermath of World War II. Super heroes have never been as realistically covered as they are here and the historical depth only adds layers of brilliance to the world.
And that just about sums 2018 as a reading year up nicely. I still need to get around to reading the remainder of The Walking Dead graphic novel, as indeed do I need to get around to Palestine and Death Note, both of which were set as potentials for May in out of my comfort zone. Bad Pharma is a frightening non-fiction look at the pharmaceutical industry, that will ensure you never look at drugs in the same way again. I re-discovered a young adults horror that gave me nightmares as a teenage in Bobby's Watching (Scared to Death) by Ted Pickford, a book I had been trying to remember the name of and locate for the better part of ten years! And of course there were some awful books, of which I cannot be bothered to mention by name here...
So here's to a splendid year of reading in 2019.
