The Amalfi Curse is a captivating blend of fantasy, historical fiction, romance, and rich Italian lore. The story sweeps you first to 1821, where Mari—a streghe del mare (sea witch)—fights to protect her beloved Amalfi Coast village with her ocean magic. In the present day, nautical archaeologist Haven arrives in Positano to reconstruct shipwrecks, only to uncover a connection to Mari’s world, a sunken treasure, and an ancient curse. Penner’s lyrical writing seamlessly weaves both timelines into a tale filled with mystery, magic, and love. Fans of The Lost Apothecary will be enchanted.
"The phenomenon had been dubbed the Amalfi Curse and, for more than eighty years, mariners avoided Li Galli altogether."

Absolutely disliked the writing. I felt like it was treating the reader as forgetful and distracted, and hated the repetitions of facts and names that I could easily remember and did not need help with.
Also, there was a passage where sexists stereotypes were presented that the contemporary female main character didn’t question at all.
I think I would have enjoyed this story, it seemed very promising, but the writing put me off to the extend that I decided to stop.

Summer witchy read set in Italy…yes please! I love when dual timeline historical fiction intertwines the stories of different women so we can see how we are still connected across time and spaces. This one really hit the spot because the summer Italian sea setting is different from traditional witchy reads

Love, witchcraft, and adventure off the coast of Italy both now and in 1820. Impeccable summer reading vibes.
