The kind of book that makes you wish you were reading it on a beach with an aperol spritz in hand.
Not perfect, but really enjoyable. It's a story with grief, romance, mystery, intrigue, magical realism, commentary on the frustrations of working in academia, and dual-timeline historical fiction all packaged fairly neatly in ~300 pages.
A couple of personal notes:
-I cringed a little when Sarah had characters eating olives straight from the tree. Yuck, girl!!!
-I'm a dual-timeline enjoyer, so I was fine with the formatting and multiple perspectives, but I will admit that I was far more interested in the past timeline than I was in the present.
-One set of lines in particular ("(view spoiler)") had me kickin' my feet giggling and misty-eyed.
-I think the ending would've been much stronger without the epilogue, but maybe that's a me thing.
-I think the addition of recipes is a very cute touch.
If you're looking for a medium-pace, easy-to-digest, summery read, give this a shot!
