I wasn't convinced by book 1, but book 2 is a different thing entirely - the story feels much more coherent

Some hacks are only trying to turn their shitty ideas into movies.

Others don't give a fuck and put topless fighting and sea vampires on their stories.

I was quite conflicted in my feelings about the first volume in this series. On the one hand, I adore the art. I think it's gorgeous, and I find something beautiful in just about every page that I look at. Actually, I've upgraded both volumes by one star, simply because of that art. And yet, I didn't become invested in the story until relatively late in the volume. And this second volume wasn't very different.

You see, the thing is, I don't really care for the main character, Stel. She is marked by her optimism from the very instant we meet her, and yet I feel like that's all she is. She's lacking nuance, and I guess it's the nuance that makes a character likable to me. So, reading her story has been a bit hard. I do like her children, though, so I guess that's some consolation. And she has developed a bit more depth in this second volume, I guess. I will continue reading, because I'm interested in the world and what will happen, and because I need to continue feasting my eyes on the gorgeous art, but I sincerely hope that Stel gets a bit more depth over the course of the series.

A visually stunning story of family, loss, revenge, and a dying way of life, Low is on equal footing with Saga, Trees, and Descender as an example of just how good modern science-fiction comics can be. Highly recommended.

At first I thought this was separating into a bunch of different plot lines, but somewhere before the halfway point it all started coming together. I really dig the different "societies" and I'm super curious what they're going to find when/if they get to the surface.

Also thought it was awful, and also original, that the sister shows up to save another sister and ends up killing all the good guys without realizing it.
