The pace of this book was absolutely perfect! There were many twists and turns and there was never a boring moment in this book. Pretty Things follows Nina Ross, a grifter, and Vanessa Liebling, a heiress/influencer, and what happens when they cross paths at the Liebling's Estate in Lake Tahoe.

I loved that this book is told in dual POV and we're able to see the thought process between both of the Nina and Vanessa as they're telling the story of their upbringing, how the perceive each other vs. what they're really like, and how they choose to navigate the predicament they have essentially placed themselves in. This book will have you jumping back and forth between who is coning who and who you can and cannot trust. 10/10 recommend.

Meeting someone by chance is one thing, but purposely crossing paths with them again is another. Written in a dual timeline from the perspectives of Nina and Vanessa, a grifter and an heiress, Janelle Brown’s Pretty Things highlights how the world of these two women merge and impact each other amid a scheme gone awry. The twists and turns in this story culminate into a book you won’t want to put down.

This book was SO GOOD.

I really got sucked into this quickly. Even though it was on the longer side, I found myself reading hundreds of pages per sitting.

There was one minor plot hole that I noticed, but otherwise I loved it.

This book has everything! Alternating narrators, terrible rich people, grifters, intrigue and betrayal, murder, snow. A++

I was on the edge of my seat for this entire book. Oh my goodness the twists and turns, the characters, the full and genuine exploration of these two highly flawed and deeply intertwined characters. Each time I thought the large twist was here, there was another. This book is delicious and dark and smarter than you might think (though a bit heavy handed with themes of blame, and a lot more complicated with themes of “pretty things” than I initially expected). I listened to the audiobook and Julia Whelan absolutely excels, per always. Also a million points for the primary characters being mostly women and a not terrible portrayal of severe mental illness.

I've read enough thrillers to feel like I can generally see the plot twists coming, even if I don't predict them accurately. Janelle Brown, though, dropped one that was so unexpected to me that I literally found my husband to go "I DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING!" Well done.
