While this was probably longer than it needed to be, it was still an enjoyable book. Some of the other reviews said they didn't like Vanessa but I think she was an interesting character and a good foil to Nina. Overall, this was a good, engaging story.

For nearly 500 pages, I wanted a lot more than I got.

Scam artists, influencers, and twisty family legacies: the premise of PRETTY THINGS seems so intriguing, right? But it takes so long to get to anything interesting I have a hard time recommending it.

Nina grows up always on the move with her con artist mother, while Vanessa is raised with seemingly endless privilege and money. After Vanessa’s family wrongs Nina as a teen, Nina comes back as an adult under a false identity to try and scam Vanessa out of everything.

Part of what makes this book so long is that for most of their interactions, I had to read 30 pages of it from Nina’s perspective and then 30 pages from Vanessa’s for the exact same conversation. This structure weighed down the whole plot and I gradually lost interest throughout PRETTY THINGS.

I didn’t not like it, but I didn’t love it, ya know?
