I thought that the writing itself was pretty solid, but I couldn't wrap myself around the plot. It just wasn't intriguing enough or compelling enough to draw me in, and by the end I couldn't figure out who I was meant to be rooting for. Not a terrible experience, and I suppose fairly entertaining, but I would have hoped for a little more. Looking forward to taking another go at this author.

If you can get through the middle, the ending is the reward. The scenery (Lake Tahoe) and the plot twists and Nicole Kidman have the potential for a great movie.

What do you get when you combine a grifter, an heiress, A con job, and revenge? You get an entertaining fast-paced story with well drawn characters and a gripping storyline. This is a 496 page book, 16 hours on audio, and it flew by! I was completely invested with these characters and their shenanigans. Nina knows the con, she was taught by the best, her mother. Nina has tried to avoid the life, but now that her mother’s cancer has reemerged it is time for one last BIG con. Vanessa appears to have it all, but things aren’t always as they seem. She has live a glamorous life filled with money and glitz. Now a popular Instagram influencer Vanessa travels around in gorgeous clothes with the beautiful people. But behind all this is a lot of grief and after her engagement is called off things really start to fall apart. The two women’s lives collide on the shores of Lake Tahoe and what follows is a captivating and compelling tale.

Janellel Brown has crafted a unique and refreshing story of misdirection, betrayal, revenge, blackmail, and contempt. Julia Walen and Lauren Fortgang did a wonderful job with the audiobook narration bringing the perfect voices to these characters. I loved how this story unfolded. So many WTF moments and a perfect ending. This is the perfect poolside escapist read.

DNF @30% in. The first 30% absolutely nothing was happening. It was so slow going and I had no interest to find out what happened.

Pretty Things is a slow burning thriller with elements of class and social media influencer themes. I love a good binge-able thriller now and then. Pretty Things by Janelle Brown is just that. Two women, who are wildly different, one a grifter who proceeds from one scam to the next, the other a heiress and social media influencer whose life appears picture perfect on her Instagram feed. A "con gone wrong" brings these two face to face. A thriller with a social media influencer twist? I'm so there. I highly recommend Pretty Things if you like slow burning thrillers with lots of character development.

This was very well written and extremely readable. However, what does it say about me that I knew all of the plot twists before they even happened? Did the writer telegraph them in just the right way...or have I read too many stories like this one? Was I cursed by the "I already know a twist is coming so I'll look out for it" disease? Who knows? Either way, I enjoyed it.

A suspenseful fun read

This book follows a young woman and her boyfriend as they con an heiress (and sister of a high school flame). There are lots of twists and turns, surprises and suspense. This was an entertaining read.
