A sinister plan is underfoot to prevent souls from crossing over and it is up to Tella and Lydia to foil it and to restore the balance, but Tella’s quest for answers leads her to unexpected places and the answers she gets only lead to more questions. Spirit’s Lullaby, the second book of the Shaudrey Universe series continues the adventures of Tella whom we first met in Fire’s Song. This time, it is no curse, but a race to restore the balance of the world so as to prevent it from being destroyed. Spirit’s Lullaby is even more interesting that Fire’s Song with a more complex and darker plot, and the magic system and theology that was touched upon in Fire’s Song is further elaborated here, particularly with regard to the angels and the Blessed borns. Spirit’s Lullaby is a must-read for all who loves fantasy and fairytales. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed getting to see more of the magic in the universe J.E. Mueller is creating and I appreciated the her continued dedication to diverse representation in her characters. The story takes many twists and turns and, while Spirit's Lullaby follows Tella (who was an important side character in the last book) instead of Key, we get to see what has become of our beloved characters from Fire's Song. I am looking forward to seeing who the next book focuses on.
