When you’ve read one book about a girl needing training by a man, you’ve read them all. It does seem to be a common trope within the historical romance novels. Sophie Jordan brings a flair of cute romance to it all. I disliked the sudden-ness of it all. He proposes permanent mistress and then marriage so quickly. I didn’t find the romance had a whole lot of development time. Regardless, enjoyable book.

A wonderfully passionate historical romance with quite a few things you need to ignore.

Marian Langley needs to save her family from aggressive money lenders and her only respectable option is marrying Mr. Lawrence who she despises. Marian decides that that is not her only option if you broaden your horizons a bit.... and her decision is to become a mistress to a wealthy man. The only hitch to her plan is that she has zero knowledge on how to go about the process. This is where the Duke of Warrington, Nathaniel comes in. As the only man in the village who doesn’t know her or her family well and can be trusted to keep a secret, Marian approaches Nathaniel, who was minding his own business, to teach her the art of seduction. Nathaniel is less than interested in her proposition but takes it up to win a wager. What continues is a series of passionate encounters, a hasty elopement and a whole lot of love filled moments.

The wager and the decision to become a mistress can ruffle your feathers but what annoyed me more was that the wager completely dropped off the story. No one mentions it at all.

I doubt young women of the Regency times would choose to become a mistress instead of marrying especially when she had two younger sisters. But if you ignore this, the story progresses smoothly and is very engaging even if a little fast paced. I would have liked to read more encounters between the main leads which did not just involve “tutoring”.
However, with all the loopholes, I enjoyed reading this book.
