A short, fairly brutal read that doesn't pull it's punches. The story is certainly a dark one, focusing on a sadistic form of teenage lust - or love? - and sadly it didn't quite work for me. Perhaps it's because I didn't particularly like either of the main characters. Maybe an unfair criticism, as I'm sure that was very much the intention.
It's not difficult to recommend reading it, though. Greenwood's writing is of a typically very high standard, as usual, and he's fast becoming a new favourite author of mine. Just check first if you have any trigger warnings, as it's not unlikely that this book will hit at least one of them.

There are many triggers in this story (Child rape, animal abuse) so be warned.
Read as part of the #2023 Gagents of Chaos Reading Challenge over on the Facebook group of the same name.
This short story had the feel of a Norman Rockwell painting gone so very, very wrong. At 22 pages, this was a very short story, but it still packs a punch. Neither of the main characters were all that likable, and I would be hard pressed to identify a protagonist or antagonist, both girls in the story are equally horrible examples of humanity. In spite of all that, I am intrigued by this author and will be seeking out additional reads.

This story is incredibly dark but artfully written. Greenwood’s way of weaving words into imagery is seamless. I think I read a review in here that said the story reminded them of a Thomas Kincaid painting gone wrong and I think that was a great description. I loved this short story and I look forward to read more of Gage Greenwood’s work!

Horror is more than just blood and guts, it's exploring the dark aspect of humanity and seeing what monsters lurk in the most average places.
Grackles on the Feeder really explores this concept, showing us what we can excuse witnessing, partaking in, doing because of loving someone.
It was a very brief story, would have enjoyed more but that's cause I love Gage's style. He has the ability to draw us into the character's world and put us in their shoes without making it feel forced or unnatural. It was easy to understand, brutal, and made me want to go hug the little ones in my life because it is too easy to find yourself on the receiving end.
Would recommend though go in with a strong stomach and be prepared for SA and animal abuse.
