I really did not enjoy this book. The first portion of the book was slow-moving but I was interested in the story and was curious to see what direction the story was going to go in. I thought the story had a lot of potential but it soon got weird and I lost interest. There was a voodoo element that felt off and didn't seem to match with the rest of the story.
There were some plot points that were introduced and I thought were going to play a part in the reveal but they were never mentioned again. Then some of the plot twists seemed to come out of nowhere which can be a good thing but in this book they didn't work
Overall I didn't enjoy this book at all. The story went in a direction that I was not expecting and I didn't like.

Wow this was a RIDE! It went down so many plot twists that I would never have seen coming and the writing really kept me hooked for more. I must admit it was a little slow at the start, as I didn't really know where the story was going to take me, but the more I read, the more drama kicked off and the more I was captivated by it. I love Sarah and her books and this one is no different!
I honestly wouldn’t have put this book in the thriller genre as it seemed to be more like a drama - honestly, I remember thinking of the real house wives at points in this book - probably with the same amounts of secrets they’d like to keep buried.
I love a thriller where you think you know who the who did it and at the end there’s this massive plot twist and your mouth just hangs open like the sand tiger in Aladdin. But there was no big plot twist or even just a plot wiggle - I’d figured it out way before the ending.
It was a good read in lockdown but I just don’t think this author and I are compatible.

This was an easy read that drew me in initially. I enjoyed the set up and felt the foundation was solid, but it took so long to build and then I just never felt like there was much of a pay off.
I was expecting more of a thriller, which I can’t say it was in any respect. Half way through It suddenly changed to an almost murder mystery, but with such a jumble of plot lines this didn’t quite feel right either. The best way to describe it is as a domestic drama, which there was certainly lots of!
I also felt a real lack of connection to any of the characters, a big driving force of the book is their relationships with each other but I never really felt fully invested in these so I struggled to understand their motivations.
(Minimal spoiler upcoming)
Finally, I have to mention the voodoo and black magic arc. Now I’m definitely not one to be put off by this and I was intrigued to see how it turned out but, as with most of the book, it fell a little flat. With the poisoning and the black magic elements I was reminded of Agatha Christie’s ‘The Pale Horse’ but the theme wasn’t handled so well. I don’t expect a Christie level novel, and this book has added layers that made it very different, but there’s so much more information on the topic that Pinborough has at her fingertips that Christie didn’t which could have made this a truly memorable element.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

After hearing so much about the author of 'Behind Her Eyes', I was looking forward to delving into this one.
I am somewhat underwhelmed.
I found myself rolling my eyes at the ypunger/wilder wife intimidating the older woman stereotype just so predictable!
The twists later just sounded like the author wanted it to be crazy and it just went weird!

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this book. I'd probably give it 2.5 stars. Unlike others in the genre, this book wasn't guessable most of the time, which felt like a win, but ultimately that meant when the twist ending did land, it came without the "that makes sense" kind of inevitably that builds from foreshadowing. I really liked her book Behind Her Eyes and will continue to recommend that one over this.
I received a digital ARC of this title from Edelweiss for an honest review.
Marcie is the second wife to Jason Maddox, a wealthy lawyer in Savannah, GA. They married after Jason cheated on his first wife with her. Keeping up appearances and fitting in with the bougie set is tough, but Marcie is hanging on. But when Jason's boss, William, brings home a new, young bride home from a sabbatical in London (where he went to get over the death of his first wife) everything is thrown into chaos.
Everyone has secrets in this dark thriller from Pinborough. You'll be on the edge of your seat as you read about them all.
This is another book where no o e is all that likable. These are all terrible people with rich people problems. I skimmed a bit just to get through some of the more tedious sections, but overall this was fairly readable.

A little murder. A little voodoo. A lot of money. A little wacky.
(Note: some frequent sex scenes that didn’t really help move the plot.)

A super twisty, juicy, fun ride. Just what I needed at the time I read it. Love the Savannah setting and all its weirdness! Received ARC from publisher William Morrow/HarperCollins via Goodreads giveaway - thank you.
