I saw completely opposite reviews on this book before I picked it up - this in itself was intriguing to me.

So, it was alright... there were some noteworthy eerie scenes here and there, but the main plot itself (once it was revealed who the victim was) was quite obvious. I couldn't believe that the police would completely skip the main villain given the proximity to the victim - in any other book, they would've been the main suspect for the case.

Marcie's character was initially quite interesting, but after a while, she was predictable. There was nothing surprising about her in the end. Keisha was probably the most interesting character to me overall, although after a while, she turned into a cliche.

I agreed with some other reviews that said the book felt more like hard-hitting soap opera than thrillers. I quite liked the Author's writing style though, so I'd be checking her other books.

Not my favorite. I don't think I loved the audiobook narrators, which didn't help.

This might be spoilery, but I don't think so...? But I felt like the answer to the mystery was planted pretty obviously. While I didn't put together all the details, I knew what was coming, which made me not very interested in where we were being pointed.

All in all, by the time the pieces came together and this got a little interesting, I was kind of pushing just to finish the book.

I do love the little epilogue wrapping up that Sarah does as there is always a little more of a twist, but it wasn't enough to make me up the rating.

The story follows Jason and Marcie, Keisha and her much older husband William and their Southern, rich "country club" friends in the South. I have enjoyed Pinborough's work in the past, but this one just seemed to go onnnnn forever without any real substance! There were a few twists, but I eventually bailed even before the half way point because I just did not see it getting any better.

2.5 stars. I thought Behind Her Eyes was fantastic, and I liked Cross Her Heart, but this one just didn't do it for me. I actually really enjoyed the first half or so, but after that it started to feel like such a slog and I didn't care about these people at all. If you like reading about rich people problems you might enjoy this one, but I often enjoy books along that line and couldn't get into it here. By the end I just didn't care what happened to any of these characters.

I'm not an expert on Voodoo practices or beliefs, but my gut feeling is that this didn't seem like a fair representation of the Voodoo religion. I got an overall negative tone from this book about Voodoo beliefs. I enjoyed the writing, but didn't find the twists to be especially surprising. I would recommend Behind Her Eyes by this author if you're looking for a psychological suspense thriller with surprising twists.

This was a quick read...a book filled with unpleasant characters.  As a detective says near the end...they are all atrocious people.  Well, perhaps one or two are decent human beings.  But you sort of love to read about just how awful they are all.
