maybe 3.5
I liked this book overall but it took awhile to adjust to the disjointed views with so many characters and absurd coincidences. Once I thought of it as an Elmore Leonard style book with more introspection and an over abundance of stream of consciousness, I liked it better.

3.5. The story felt overly complicated and it took me almost 1/3 of the way in to get into the story but then I became engrossed. I could have done without some of Martin’s flights of fancy of living an old-fashioned married life. Not a typical detective story, Jackson Brodie ends up involved in a tangled web while in Edinburgh for his girlfriend’s play.
This one just didn't hold together that well for me. Too many disparate threads and characters and by the time they all came came together, I didn't much care. The last chapter was fun, but too little too late. I spent a lot of the second half of the book having to reminds self of who knew (or didn't know) what.
Probably just under three stars for me, but gets three stars buoyed up by the series.

I enjoyed this intricate mystery. My favorite parts were how you could see the orbits of the various characters gradually coming together. It was fascinating and enjoyable to listen to. I also loved how Jackson Brody was at the intersection of many of these stories and how he just accidentally ended up being part of them. And usually in a very incriminating fashion. It got to be pretty funny. The digressions for each character were amazing, and I liked how she tied everything together in the end, which I don’t think happened in the first book. Great stuff, and I am looking forward to book 3.

I often really enjoy Kate Atkinson's books and this was definitely an enjoyable read. Selected as my airplane book for my trip home to visit family, I found this a perfect choice. I am certain that I've read all the Jackson Brodie books before, but for some reason I just didn't remember this one, so I enjoyed it all over again. It involves an eclectic set of characters whose lives intertwine due to a road rage incident at the Edinburgh festival, and I found it engaging and witty and funny...everything you want in a flight companion.

well that ending took me by surprise.
i know some people don't enjoy this series, but i do. there are some aspects that can be a little confusing -- the author bounces around a bit, telling things out of sequence every now and then. and i had trouble keeping track of some of the characters for a bit, but the story interested me enough to continue.

On the plus side, this is a book filled with interesting characters. Usually in books with so many points-of-view there are a few that I want to skip past. Not so here.
On the down side, the plot of this book is basically a huge web of coincidences. Sometimes that sort of thing is fun, but there are too many loose threads here. It doesn't really hang together.
