not her best. I know it’s all a bit of a diversion but I couldn’t really get past the series upon series of coincidences - there just wasn’t enough connective tissue for them to make sense.

I really loved how the mysteries here were intertwined. And the character of the reclusive novelist just worked really well, in particular. (Sometimes that level of meta doesn't work, but it did here.)

My faith in crime books with Edinburgh as background is restored. The myriad of characters, the great final plot twist, the perfect inclcusion of Edinburgh as side character and not only background...
I really, really loved this book.

There are some bad reviews for this book on GoodReads, but I quite enjoyed it. It has the same back-and-forth structure that made Case Histories so enjoyable, but the story itself was maybe a little messy, not as neatly tied up as its predecessor. Atkinson's writing is top-notch though, and Jackson Brodie is a wonderful flawed protagonist.

I happened to find these books by stumbling across the tv adaptation of them, all of which I watched, and none of which have any of the COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF ANIMAL HARM THIS BOOK HAS.

This was a lot. A lot a lot. Too much a lot.

And yet I wound up finishing the book despite that, which says something about the strength of the storytelling.
